Lebrón León No, no es exageración decir que hasta el lenguaje de servicio al cliente en Puerto Rico está siendo moldeado por la prisa, la impaciencia y la falta de estándares. Hoy quiero hablar de una palabra aparentemente inocente, pero que revela mucho sobre hacia dónde vamos como sociedad: el famoso “continúe” en los restaurantes de Puerto Rico, incluidos los llamados “fast food”. En mis más de 40 años de vida, habiendo vivido dos décadas en Estados Unidos, viajado, trabajado con empresas privadas y agencias gubernamentales, jamás escuché algo similar en otro país al momento de ordenar comida. Ni en Estados Unidos, ni en países de Europa, ni en tantos lugares donde he compartido con distintas culturas (México, Costa Rica, etc.). Solo aquí, en esta especie de “Ciudad Gótica tropical” llamada Puerto Rico, hemos decidido que atender a un cliente significa empujarlo verbalmente para que se apresure: “Buenas tardes, ¿su orden?” Usted responde...

Today I want to talk about a seemingly innocent word that reveals a lot about where we are heading as a society: the now‑famous “continúe” in Puerto Rican restaurants and fast‑food chains. In my more than 40 years of life—after living two decades in the United States, traveling, and working with private companies and government agencies—I had never heard anything similar in any other country when ordering food. Not in the United States, not in Europe, not in the many places where I have shared with different cultures. Only here, in this kind of tropical “Gotham City” called Puerto Rico, have we decided that serving a customer means verbally pushing them to hurry up: “Good afternoon, your order?” You answer.
